Book Your SpotThe rituals, chants, and moments that make West Virginia University West Virginia Mountaineers game day unlike anywhere else
End of 3rd quarter
At the end of the 3rd quarter, the entire Milan Puskar Stadium — all 60,000 fans — locks arms and sings John Denver's 'Take Me Home, Country Roads' together. It's one of the most emotional, spine-tingling moments in all of college football. Visiting fans have been known to tear up.
After every WVU score
WVU's live mascot, the Mountaineer, fires a musket after every score. The crack of the rifle echoes through the stadium and sends the crowd into a frenzy. It's been a tradition since 1936 and never gets old — no matter how many times you hear it.
2–3 hours before kickoff
Fans pack Morgantown's legendary Personal Rapid Transit system — small automated pods on elevated tracks — for the ride from downtown to the stadium. The PRT is unique to Morgantown and the packed, buzzing pods full of gold-and-blue fans are a gameday experience in themselves.
3–4 hours before kickoff
Before every home game, High Street transforms into a sea of blue and gold. Fans spill out of Mario's Fishbowl, Gibbie's, and Tin 202 onto the sidewalks. Fishbowl drinks are passed around, strangers become friends, and the energy builds to a roar by kickoff.
Post-game after big wins
WVU students once famously burned couches on High Street after big wins — a chaotic tradition that became national news. It's now illegal with serious penalties, but the legend lives on in WVU lore. Today fans channel that energy into (legal) street celebrations that are just as wild.
Designated home games
For designated Gold Rush games, the entire stadium wears gold — creating a blinding wall of color visible from miles away. The athletic department coordinates the color scheme and the effect is absolutely stunning on TV and in person.
