Getting Started

What does it take
to become a host?

You don't need a business degree or nightlife experience. You need energy, local knowledge, and the drive to create a great night out. Here's what we look for.

Must be 21+

All hosts must be of legal drinking age in their state.

Know your city

Local bar knowledge and neighborhood familiarity is a huge advantage.

Social media presence

Even a small following helps you promote your crawls effectively.

Weekend availability

Most crawls run Thursday–Saturday evenings.

The Process

5 Steps to Your First Crawl

Follow this proven framework and you'll be ready to host your first crawl within a week.

Pick Your Bars

Choose 3–4 bars within walking distance of each other.

  • Look for bars within a 0.5-mile radius to keep transitions easy
  • Mix venue types: dive bar → sports bar → cocktail lounge → dance club
  • Aim for 60–90 minutes at each stop
  • Avoid venues with strict dress codes or cover charges

Pro Tip: Bars on the same block or street are ideal — guests are less likely to get lost or drop off.

Sample Route

  • 17:00 PM — Meet at Bar A (dive bar)
  • 28:15 PM — Walk to Bar B (sports bar)
  • 39:30 PM — Bar C (cocktail lounge)
  • 410:45 PM — Final stop (dance club)
Expert Tips

Best Practices by Category

Curated tips from our top-performing hosts across every stage of the crawl experience.

Scout Your Route in Advance

Essential

Walk the full route at least once before the crawl. Time each leg, note any obstacles, and identify the best meeting spots between venues.

Get Drink Specials in Writing

Pro Tip

Always confirm specials via email or text with the bar manager — not just a verbal agreement. Screenshot the confirmation.

Prepare a Guest Welcome Pack

Guest Experience

Create a simple digital or printed card with the night's schedule, bar names, drink specials, and your contact number.

Have a Backup Plan

Essential

Always have 1–2 backup venues identified. Bars can close unexpectedly, have private events, or become too crowded.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything new hosts ask before their first crawl.

How soon can I host my first crawl after signing up?
Most new hosts are approved within 48–72 hours. Once approved, you can create and publish your first crawl immediately through the host dashboard.
Do I need to find my own bars?
Yes — part of what makes a great host is building local relationships. We provide a bar outreach template and tips, but you'll negotiate the specials directly with venue managers.
How and when do I get paid?
Payouts are processed within 3–5 business days after your crawl completes. You'll see earnings in your dashboard in real time as tickets are sold.
What if a guest causes problems during the crawl?
Follow the de-escalation steps in the Emergency Protocols section. You have the authority to remove any guest who poses a safety risk. Contact BarCrawl support immediately if the situation escalates.
Can I host crawls in multiple cities?
Yes! Gold and Elite tier hosts can apply for multi-city territory expansion. Contact your territory manager once you've completed 15+ crawls.
Is there a minimum number of guests required?
There's no hard minimum, but we recommend a minimum of 8 guests for a great experience. Crawls with fewer than 5 confirmed guests may be rescheduled.
